Burning Away 3 © Kei Ito.
I found this silver-gelatin created chemigram from the series 'Burning Away' so very intriguing. Even more so after finding out Ito, a fellow Asian-American, had created them in response to family trauma passed down from his late grandfather, a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and the loss of many other family members from the explosion and subsequent radiation poisoning. He says his work "meditates on the complexity of his identity and heritage and seeks to visualize invisible forces such as radiation, memory, and human morality." This personal and historical perspective give this work so much more depth past the graphic quality that first pulled me in asking me to take a closer look. ■
