ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Deanna Dikeman

Most all juried photo exhibitions and publications, as well as our beloved Shots Magazine, exalt the virtues of the single image. Artistically, this is to the detriment of those working in series, sequences, or on long term projects.
The long term project 'Leaving and Waving' by Deanna Dikeman is a remarkable case-in-point. The artist explains, "For 27 years, I took photographs as I waved good-bye and drove away from visiting my parents at their home in Sioux City, Iowa. I started in 1991 with a quick snapshot, and I continued taking photographs with each departure. I never set out to make this series."
Seen individually, most of her photos appear to be mere snapshots capable of being made by anyone. It is when viewed as a series that their brilliance appears. You see the nuance and feel the love exchanged.
So, as we continue to celebrate the remarkable single images submitted to Shots, lets not forget the power and importance of series-based work and long-term projects. ■
